The Homestead Credit is a tax credit funded by the State of Iowa for qualifying homeowners, and is generally based on the first $4,850 of Net Taxable Value.
Applicants must own and occupy the property as a homestead on July 1st of each year and must declare residency in Iowa for income tax purposes
Applicants must occupy the property for at least six months each year
Those in the military or nursing homes who do not occupy the home are also eligible.
Deadline: July 1st. Applications received after will not be applied until the following year when property taxes are re-calculated. The credit is allowed for successive years without further filing as long as eligible.
To get a copy of the Homestead Exemption Application, call the assessor's office in your county and ask for details on the homestead exemption program. In most counties, you must submit a homestead exemption application to your county tax assessor. If you live in Washington County, you will need to sign up at the Assessor's office, located at 210 W. Main Street, Washington, IA (McCreedy Building).
